Way Out in the Desert

Way out in the desert

This week we learned about the desert.  We read a great book, "Way Out in the Desert".  Each page has a number that you try to find.  The kids did an awesome job finding all the numbers.
Can you find the number 5?  If not, ask your child. I know they can find it.  :)

This toe-tapping text will have you singing along with the lovable creatures of the desert in no time! Filled with vibrant illustrations of many of the charming plants and animals that call the Sonoran Desert home, Way Out in the Desert is a wonderful teaching tool that takes you on a trip down memory lane. If you remember singing Over in the Meadow as a child, now you can give your children their own memories of this timeless tune.

We also sang about the desert.

I wish I would have gotten more pictures this week but sometimes we are so busy and I don't get a chance to grab my camera.

We made snakes out of beads.  We encouraged making patterns with the beads.  Some kids got the concept of patterns and some just needed to work on their find motor skills.

We are working hard on projects for our Open House.  If you don't see much work coming home in the next couple weeks, it is because we are saving it for Open House.  The kids have been working on their cutting skills.  This is a difficult task for many and for many this is the first or very beginning of learning to use scissors.

We are making our desert scene where we are going to put our cactuses and colored desert animals.

Here is one of the way that we encourage using fine motor skills.

Painting a cactus
Way out in the Desert, we are digging in the sand.

The kids could retell the story, "Cactus Hotel".

We also did some desert yoga!  We didn't get any pictures of them this week.  See if your child remembers how to do the camel, cactus flower, gecko, sunshine and jack rabbit.

We spent a lot of time working on the letters of our names this week.  Ask your child what letter their child's name starts with.  When the children come into the classroom they find their names and move them from home to school.  First and last names are up there now.  Be sure to ask your child what their full names are.  Some know them and some need a little more practice.
Here we are tracing our first initial at the easel.
